The US has vetoed a United Nations security council resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, which Washington claimed undermined diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. All 14 other nations on the security council voted in favour, including the other permanent members Britain, China, France and Russia. However, Dorothy Shea, Washington’s ambassador to the UN, blocked the proposal. “This resolution would undermine diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire that reflects the realities on the ground and emboldens Hamas. This resolution also draws false equivalence between Israel and Hamas,” Shea said just before the vote in New York.
