Q&A: Francesca Albanese Says Truth Has Become a Casualty in Gaza

On 27 October 2026, Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, briefed journalists following the presentation of her latest report to the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee in New York. The Special Rapporteur discussed the deaths and detention of Palestinian journalists, restrictions on foreign media access to Gaza, Israeli military censorship, social media platforms and the portrayal of Palestinians in international news coverage. She also answered questions on the protection afforded to journalists under international law, accountability for attacks on media workers, the International Criminal Court, restrictions and sanctions affecting her work, and her criticism of media coverage of Gaza. The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 is an independent expert mandated by the UN Human Rights Council. Special Rapporteurs serve in their individual capacities, and the views, findings and conclusions they present are their own independent assessments.
