Israeli media reports that Donald Trump has called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reassure him that a final agreement with Iran will stop its nuclear program. Netanyahu reportedly told the US president that Israel would preserve its freedom to act against regional threats. In an interview on Al Jazeera, political analyst and author Akiva Eldar said the gap between what Netanyahu wants and what he promised the Israeli people is "not a gap, it's an abyss." He contrasted the 2015 JCPOA agreement with the current deal being negotiated, noting that Netanyahu promised Israelis "regime change and a complete destruction of the infrastructure of long-range missiles." Eldar added: "People who lost their homes in the last war are still waiting to see the money from the government." Eldar said Netanyahu put "all his chips" on Trump but argued that the American public is "fed up" with Netanyahu dragging the US into a war that has nothing to do with their interests. "They have a long weekend, they travel, and they know how much they pay for gasoline," he said. Eldar also expressed concern about Israel's standing internationally: "I will be kind of hesitant to show my Israeli passport. Israel became a pariah out of this." Eldar concluded that Netanyahu would try to "sell us the total victory" something he failed to achieve in Gaza, Lebanon, and now Iran and predicted that Netanyahu "is going to lose the support of the American people." He expressed hope that after October elections, there will be a government "that will be able to collect the pieces."
