Israel turning south Lebanon into Gaza, war surgeon warns

In an interview on Al Jazeera, war surgeon Dr Mohammed Tahir, , CEO of the Al-Resaleh Foundation who has spent seven months in Gaza and the past few weeks in southern Lebanon, warned that Israel is "turning the south of Lebanon into Gaza" and "wiping the south off the map." If Israel had its way, he said, it "would absolutely occupy the entire southern region of Lebanon and they would do it tomorrow." Dr Tahir described Israeli use of a warhead containing thousands of tiny tungsten cubes, calling it "effectively a modern day nail bomb." The cubes leave only a tiny scratch on the skin but cause devastating internal injuries. "There's no way that this can be a precision strike," he said. He added that he has seen "absolutely no evidence" of Israeli claims that Hezbollah uses ambulances to move weapons. He said at least 103 Lebanese medical workers have been killed since March 2, adding that he was "not surprised" as he saw the same targeting of healthcare workers in Gaza. On displacement, he said over a million people are internally displaced in Lebanon, with families living out of cars or tents on beaches, facing lack of hygiene, sanitation, and dignity. He noted that some patients he treats have nowhere to go after surgery, blocking hospital beds and leading to infections. Dr Tahir concluded: "If this is not brought to an end — not a ceasefire, a complete end to the war — then human suffering will be untold."
