The Palestinian flag has been raised at the mission in London, a day after the UK and three other Western countries recognised a Palestinian state. The Palestinian mission in London will now become an embassy. More countries including France are expected to recognise the state of Palestine as the United Nations General Assembly gets underway in the coming hours. The Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, has hailed the UK's recognition as historic and long overdue. Amnesty International says the UK government’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state will be “a hollow gesture” unless it is matched by concrete measures to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza and decades-long occupation. British independent MP Shockat Adam says that the UK’s recognition of Palestine’s statehood is “just the beginning” of a process to realising a viable Palestinian state.
